The New 3D Systems ProJet HDplus 3D Printer

Every year the EuroMold conference seems to be the place where new commercial 3D printing products are announced, and no surprise, we haz a new printer from 3D Systems: The ProJet HD 3000plus, a big brother to the ProJet HD 3000.

The “plus” obviously means “more” in this case, because the PJHD3K+ has an expanded build envelope of 29.8 x 18.5 x 20.3 cm in HD mode. Wait – “HD Mode”? What’s that? This printer can print in 3 different modes, HD, UHD and XHD. The difference is resolution:

  • HD Mode: 328 x 328 x 606 DPI (xyz) 40 micron layers
  • UHD Mode: 656 x 656 x 800 DPI (xyz) 31 micron layers
  • XHD Mode: 656 x 656 x 1600 DPI (xyz) 16 micron layers

While the resolution is ferociously detailed, there’s a cost to finer prints. The build envelope shrinks in UHD and XHD modes to 20.3 x 17.8 x 15.2 cm, a loss of about half the chamber. We suspect this is due to complex gearing adjustments to achieve the higher resolution. But no matter – the build chamber is still pretty large anyway.

Interesting feature: The 254kg 3D printer can email you notifications, presumably when prints are complete.

Estimated pricing for the new PJHD3K+: USD$79,900.
