If you’ve made many 3D models you’ll soon encounter the problem of managing them. Which one is the correct one? Which copies are old and which are new? What changed between this version and that one? The software world has long solved these issues through the use of “change management software”, such as the SubVersion or GIT. But use of such tools has not been common with 3D models.
Until now.
Wil Chung has created a new web service: Cubehero that combines 3D models, change management software and a slick web interface into an easy-to-use service for managing and sharing your 3D models. It’s actually a direct application of GIT software for 3D model management.
Cubehero lets you upload a model and keep track of changes, as well as providing downloadability, information and a 3D spinnable view of the model. You can even visually see the changes from one version of the model to the next.
Chung says:
I created Cubehero as a way to help collaboration between people working on 3D printable projects. As 3D printers become democratized, people will want to share the things they’ve built, and as the project get more complicated, version control will make it easier for them to work together.
There’s not many 3D models in Cubehero compared with other public repositories at the moment, but the service looks sufficiently interesting to give it a try.
