America Makes and NCDMM are announcing some changes to their top structuring.

America Makes, the National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute, along with the National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining (NCDMM), which manages it, are shaking up the organization of their organizations.

Spring is a time of change for the world, and as the trees bloom, industry is gearing up for a very busy season indeed. Just a day after announcing the formation of the Army supply chain-focused AMNOW program, NCDMM and America Makes have announced their own internal adjustments.

Ralph Resnick, NCDMM President and Chief Executive Officer and Founding Director of America Makes, is stepping down from his top role. He will not be leaving NCDMM, though, as he instead makes his way in the newly-created Vice President of Strategy position.

Effective May 1, the new President and CEO of NCDMM is Dean L. Bartles, Ph.D., FSME, FASME, and NCDMM Board of Director. Dr. Bartles’ experience on the Board of NCDMM is promising for, as he notes, “a smooth transition as I’m very aware and familiar with the operations.”

At America Makes, Executive Director Rob Gorham is also stepping down.

“After six wonderful years at the NCDMM and having the privilege of serving as the America Makes Executive Director for the past two years, I am resigning effective May 31st to pursue other opportunities. I want to assure everyone that America Makes is as strong as ever as we move into the second half of FY19 with FY20 looking even better. The partnerships continue to mature and the progress we are making in the United States additive manufacturing industry amazes me daily. We should all be proud of our accomplishments and have tremendous confidence in the work we are doing together as we move forward,” said Gorham.

While there is no current permanent successor set, as of June 1st John Wilczynski, currently the America Makes Technology Director, will step in as Acting Executive Director. His role, in turn, will be managed by new Acting Technology Director Randy Gilmore, NCDMM’s VP and CTO. Resnick will also serve “in a strategic advisory role” during the transitional period, drawing from his experience as America Makes’ Founding Executive Director.

That’s quite a shuffle. And of course it’s a rather busy time for America Makes, with ongoing work with its many partners and with new and continuing initiatives such as AMNOW.

The plans do sound quite calculated, though, as each transition is well planned, if not yet all permanent. All of the men in these roles are well qualified for their next steps ahead.

And of course, change is necessary; the announcement concludes with a summary from Dr. Bartles:

“The NCDMM is thriving and these changes simple reflect not only the ongoing evolution of a growing organization, but also the flourishing professional careers of individuals. I extend my best wishes to all.”
