3D Systems Workflow Improvements

3D Systems released new software for their ProJet 1200, but the features indicate something deeper.

The ProJet 1200 is a small, relatively inexpensive industrial resin-based 3D printer suited for printing jewelry molds and similar small objects. The machine is about two years old now, but this week 3D Systems released new software for the machine.

The Geomagic Print 1.2 Release is used to drive the 1200. Here’s some of the new features we noted:

  • Virtual printer — You can now create a virtual printer, so prints can be prepared and stored without having any printer connected.
  • Create Support log — A new command is added to create a printer log file that can be used for printer support. This is used when troubleshooting with your reseller’s technical support team.
  • Bottom build pad – A Bottom build pad is now always generated even if no supports are generated. This is used when generating your own application specific supports in CAD/CAM software applications like jewelry.
  • Test projector command — To prevent accidental curing of the material, the Test Projector command is now unavailable when a cartridge is inserted in the printer.
  • Improved print time estimation — The Estimate command is improved and estimates the print time more accurately.

Also included is support for their latest color resins, which would be a mandatory change, otherwise the resins would not be usable.

Sure, these are great improvements, but we something more here. All of these (aside from the resin support) address workflow, the sequence of steps used by the machine’s operator to achieve a successful result.

If one were to read between the lines here, it seems that 3D Systems has been researching how people use their machines and is now implementing very specific changes to make life easier. These changes deal with shortening elapsed times, preventing mistakes and fixing problems.

This is a good thing. We’re hoping this approach is used in other 3D Systems products – and also used by all vendors to improve the experience of their customers.
