Well, this is curious — a new, unannounced 3D printer appeared in Creality’s latest software release.

The device in question is the “Creality mBox”, which appears to be a small, fully enclosed 3D printer.

If you upgrade to the current version of Creality Print, you’ll see it as an option to add to your portfolio of 3D printers in the app. I’m at version 7.3.0.6157, and be warned, they change releases frequently. This item might disappear.

We’ve heard absolutely nothing from Creality about an mBox device, so there is no information online about it. The software refers to the “mBox series”, so it is likely there are other machines to come. At this point all we can see is the single mBox.

However, since we can add it to our Creality Print portfolio, we can look at some of its specifications and draw some conclusions.

What’s in there? If you edit the machine’s parameters, you can see that it has a rectangular build area of 153 x 153 mm, and a build height of 153 mm. So it’s a small cubic space, much smaller than the 256mm you’d see on typical desktop systems.

The GCODE “flavour” is listed as “Klipper”, so we might guess that it operates at a high speed of perhaps up to 300mm/s when printing thin layers. In fact, 300mm/s is listed as the maximum speed of the system. Probably in practice it would run at around 150mm/s.

It uses a 0.4mm nozzle, which is unsurprising, since that’s the standard most systems use these days. It’s not confirmed, but the mBox almost certainly uses 1.75mm filament.

The “Single Extruder Multi Filament” box is ticked, suggesting that the mBox could be connected to the company’s CFS unit for multimaterial prints. However, there is only one printhead in this system.

The mBox can print layers as small as 0.8mm, which is about standard for FFF systems.

And that’s about it for specifications.

What can we learn from all this? It appears that Creality is on the verge of announcing a new, small enclosed multimaterial FFF system called the Creality mBox. The system has:

  • Build volume of 153 x 153 x 153 mm
  • Uses 1.75mm filament
  • Connects to the CFS for multimaterial print jobs
  • Comes with a 0.4mm nozzle
  • Fully enclosed
  • Likely has all the usual FFF convenience features.
  • It does not appear to be designed as a system for children.

There doesn’t seem to be anything particularly special about the system, aside from its quite small size. And that might be what it’s all about: reduced size might mean reduced cost.

Perhaps the mBox might become the lowest-cost proper desktop 3D printer of all time?

We can’t know the answers until Creality releases some official information about this system.

Or they pull it from Creality Print on the next release.
