3D printing giant 3D Systems announced it’s acquired Medical Modeling, Inc., a provider of custom medical products.

The new acquisition makes heavy use of 3D technology, as they produce “patient-specific medical device solutions with FDA-cleared manufacturing processes”. In other words, they make custom pieces for individual reconstructive surgery, which, of course, is a perfect application of 3D printing.

We see this as part of 3D Systems’ ongoing strategy of acquisitions. They’ve made a habit of acquiring companies that make profitable use of their 3D products and Medical Modeling is no exception: they use 3D Systems’ Geomagic software and haptic tools to develop the designs. It’s an old corporate strategy in which the entire chain of supply from materials to delivery are integrated.
