Sciaky’s Scary Electron Beam

Sciaky makes an industrial 3D metal printer that has some pretty scary specifications.

The Sciaky Additive Manufacturing solution uses an electron beam technique. Metal is melted by an electron beam that traverses each layer of the print. What’s fascinating to us is the specs. The machine can deposit up to 18kg (40 lbs) of metal per hour! Its build volume is similarly gigantic: parts up to 5.8 x 1.2 x 1.2m (19 x 4 x 4 feet).

The parts produced do appear a bit rough, as the layer size is quite large. However, workshops where the Sciaky might be installed would typically already have sophisticated finishing equipment that could smooth these perfectly.

We don’t know the price of this unit and won’t be finding out, as we suspect it’s probably over our budget.
