The folks from Sur 3D have developed a new online 3D printing system for jewelry: DecodedHeart.
The system is typical of generative systems in that it is constrained to a couple of very useful methods. This makes it far easier for potential customers to navigate through the process.
DecodedHeart offers three methods of generative jewelry designs:
- Geography: By specifying a geographic location, the system can derive the street map in that area and generate a matching pattern for a pendant.
- Voice: Their app permits you to speak a message and the waveform is automatically transformed into a 3D model for use as a pendant.
- Monogram: The simplest of their three generative apps, this one accepts three characters and transforms them into a 3D pendant.
All designs offer limited customization after initial generation, such as changing the font on the Monogram designs.
Once youāve completed your design you can choose a size and select different metals in which to produce the item. Currently they offer silver, gold plated, rose gold plated and bronze. Wisely they do not offer plastic options, as they would offer insufficient revenue to be worthwhile. Pricing for most items appears to be in the USD$100-200 range, depending on what your design does.
Itās very simple to use, and that may be the key for this type of service: consumers have proven they are not amenable to complex 3D work, as the collapse of the consumer 3D printer market demonstrates.
Will they take up easy-to-use services such as DecodedHeart? Time will tell.
