There’s a very interesting story going on at Creative Fabrica, a company that previously had nothing to do with 3D printing.
Creative Fabrica is a long-term online website and marketplace for 2D digital assets, typically used by designers. You could, for example, pick up a cool new font, an icon package, or even SVG files for use on a Cricut machine.
They provide these assets through a subscription service, where it’s “all you can eat”.
This type of service has been around for decades, and I’ve been concerned about their future: if AI tools can generate anything you need on demand, why would you need a repository?
It seems that Creative Fabrica also has those fears, because they developed an “AI Studio” where you can do exactly that. Their service now allows subscribers to:
- Create images
- Edit images
- Vectorize images
- Upscale images
- Remove backgrounds
- Remove people from images
- Generate logos
- Generate videos
- Generate music
- Generate sound effects
- Generate speech
- Review designs
- Remove watermarks
- Convert and compress files
- Resize images
- Generate colouring pages
- Generate quotes
And more.
Now they’ve added something completely new: 3D generations. You can use their AI Studio to both view and generate 3D models from a text prompt. Yes, this is another Text to 3D service.
They are certainly not the only service of this kind; we’ve been testing quite a few of them lately, and there will be more to come.
What’s most interesting about this development is that Creative Fabrica is NOT a new startup trying to leverage AI tools to create a 3D model generator. This is a well-established, long-term 2D service that is now branching into 3D territory.
That’s a change. Before this, the text-to-3D market was dominated by a series of hot startups that have quickly created pop-up services to do this type of function. Their main issue is attracting users to their increasingly less unique 3D generation service.
Here, however, Creative Fabrica is quite different: they already have a big audience, and they are simply adding text-to-3D as an additional function.
This is also a good idea because companies like Bambu Lab have been producing 3D printers that basically anyone can now easily operate. This could make the market for 3D printable assets far larger than ever before, making it a reasonable venture for digital asset firms.
If many of the 2D digital asset providers also add 3D generation services, then how could all of these 3D startups survive? They’d be facing competition with far bigger operations that have massive audiences.
For the digital asset providers, it could be that they will all eventually have to add AI generation services just to keep up with their competitors. That could include 3D services, as is the case with Creative Fabrica.
I think we are now sliding into a very different digital asset world. We will generate, not select.
