
This week’s selection is the OOMWOO Open Source Robot Vacuum by Makers Pet .
California-based Makers Pet released an open-source design for a robot vacuum cleaning robot called OOMWOO, which is mostly 3D printable. The company provides online sales of robot parts, many of which could be used in the OOMWOO.
Here’s how they describe the system:
”OOMWOO is an open-source home robot vacuum you can build yourself, made for the Raspberry Pi, ROS2, Home Assistant, and 3D-printing communities. It uses an affordable 2D LiDAR to map your home and navigate on its own. Local, no cloud required for regular functionality, no vendor lock-in.”
That sounds pretty attractive, since we’ve all heard the stories of how your home layout and activities are being uploaded to big corps by your commercial robot vacuum.
Why “OOMWOO”? It turns out that this name reads the same upside down, reminiscent of how the robot roams around in all directions.
The project is targeting an approximate US$200 cost for the parts required to build the OOMWOO. These would include motors, brushes, wheels, LiDAR, Raspberry Pi4/5, sensors, wires, etc. And there are quite a few 3D-printed parts to make, which comprise the housing.
The design includes not only the robot vacuum itself, but also a dock where the OOMWOO can recharge when it feels the need for some extra energy.
