This week’s selection is “3D Printing Failures: 2022 Edition: How to Diagnose and Repair ALL Desktop 3D Printing Issues” by Sean Aranda.

I’m pretty certain many Fabbaloo readers may have received a spanky brand new desktop 3D printer in the past few days, and they might be having issues using it. It’s time to promote this highly useful book once again.

The book, “3D Printing Failures”, was first published back in 2019, and has been updated annually ever since. This version is freshly updated for 2022, including new information to adapt to today’s desktop 3D printers.

While many people in the general public have the belief that 3D printers can “print anything”, nothing could be farther from the truth. The fact is that these devices, while they theoretically can produce any solid object that fits in the build volume, it can be quite tricky to do so. This is in spite of most 3D printer manufacturers taking steps to simplify things.

There is still a significant amount of trivia knowledge that must be learned before one can properly succeed at desktop 3D printing. Normally this operational knowledge is obtained through a very tedious trial and error period after opening up the machine. Sometimes this ordeal is so arduous that some novices literally give up and trash the machine.

It doesn’t have to be that way. There are multiple ways to gain advice for the early stages of your 3D printing experience, and one of the most useful is this book by Aranda.

Aranda, an experienced 3D printer operator, has collected all his trivia knowledge about 3D printer operation and packed it into a single, easy-to-read book.

Previous releases of this book have been very well received, and I’ve personally heard from readers that it is quite valuable to have on hand.

He has organized the book around a number of commonly encountered situations that every 3D printer operator will eventually have to learn:

  • Bed Adhesion
  • Build Plate Malfunctioning
  • Curling of Layers and Angles
  • Electrical Safety
  • Elephant Foot
  • Extruder Motor Skipping
  • Filament Snapping
  • Gaps in Walls and Top Layers
  • Ghosting
  • Holes in Print
  • Hotend Malfunctioning
  • Layer Bulges
  • Layer Shifts
  • Limitations
  • Mandatory Maintanence
  • Missing Layers
  • Model Errors
  • Not Finding Home
  • Nozzle Clogs
  • Over/Under Extrusion
  • Parts Being Knocked Off
  • Parts Not Mating Together
  • Patterns in Outer Surface
  • Poor Layer Adhesion
  • Power Loss Recovery Issues
  • Resin Printing
  • Running Out of Filament
  • Settings Issues
  • Squished Layers
  • Stepper Motor Malfunctioning
  • Stringy or Blobby Prints
  • Stripped Filament
  • Unlevelled Build Plate
  • Warping
  • Z-Axis Wobble
  • Z-Height Calibration

Having operated countless 3D printers myself, I can tell you that you’ll eventually end up with each and every one of these problems if you continue operations.

3D printers are incredibly powerful, but they’re finicky and tend to break. You absolutely will need to know what to do, and this book will tell you.
