This week’s selection is the X Bench by The New Raw.
Rotterdam-based The New Raw is a design firm that focuses on sustainable furniture that’s 3D printed with robotic systems. They were founded nine years ago, and have produced quite a number of very unusual designs since then.
This year they developed a new product called the “X Bench” (not related to the social media service).

At first glance, the X Bench does not even look like a bench. However, it is designed for two people, and rocks back and forth. They explain:
“Its sculptural form features two intersecting volumes, which create a playful yet robust structure. Suited for both indoor and outdoor environments, the bench fosters social interaction and conversation, making it an inviting piece for any space with an open-hearted character. The design encourages users to engage with the piece and with each other in a relaxed, enjoyable manner.”
As you might guess, the X Bench is printed on its side, and then rotated after printing to enter “bench mode”.
The bench is made from sustainable materials, meaning there will be some visible artifacts in the final product. However, they say the bench uses 55kg of recycled material, causing a huge 143kg of CO2 savings.
The New Raw is one of the few companies producing unusual 3D printed furniture. With the endless possibilities present, there should be more creative designers developing furniture using this technology.
