We now know a bit more about the secretive business of Formlabs.

Last week, the company announced a major new 3D printer, the Fuse X1 SLS system, designed for industry.

But hidden at the bottom of the press release was information about Formlabs’ business that we hadn’t seen previously. Formlabs is a private company and is not obliged to release any financials to the public, quite unlike public companies that must present their financials every quarter.

What did we learn? A few interesting points:

  • Largest professional 3D printing company founded since the 1980s
  • Annual revenue surpassing $250 million in 2025
  • Greater than 10% free cash flow margin while maintaining profitability for over 2 years
  • More than 500 million parts printed by customers using Formlabs printers and materials
  • Net Promoter Score (NPS) of 60 for Form 4 and Form 4L, reflecting strong customer satisfaction

The fact that Formlabs is profitable — and for two years — is quite notable. Many, perhaps most, 3D printer manufacturers are actually losing money. The typical pattern is to raise a lot of investor money through some hype and then burn down that cash until it’s gone. We’ve seen several big players disappear recently as they went through that very sequence. Example: Desktop Metal.

Formlabs is not one of those companies. By being profitable for more than two years, they are the exception.

Their revenue of US$250M last year is also very notable, and profitability implies that their expenses are less than that amount each year. That level of revenue places them very high among 3D printer manufacturers, perhaps near Creality or other large players. However, we can’t know for sure because Formlabs remains a private company.

According to Crunchbase, Formlabs has received a total of US$253M in investment since their founding back in the early 2010s. Now they’re pulling in that much money each year.

When you look back at the 3D printer manufacturers that launched around that same time, it’s very clear that Formlabs is the winner. MakerBot, Solidoodle, and many others have long since departed, and few companies even survived, let alone thrived as Formlabs has done.
