This week’s selection is the useful “The Ultimate Guide to Designing, Prototyping and Mass Manufacturing your Product Idea” by Jason Vander Griendt.
Published in 2017, this book delves into the world of product prototyping and manufacturing. There is a sequence of steps that manufacturers must use to iteratively create an optimum design for manufacturing, and that is what you can find within this book’s pages.
The author explains that the book was inspired by a series of questions that repeatedly arrived at their CAD business. The book attempts to answer them. They explain:
It aims to save you countless hours spent researching how to get started, how to 3D print something, how much does 3D printing cost, how to create a 3D file, how to make a mold, what does a mold cost, how to mass produce something and more all in one place. Rather than call numerous companies, read endless blogs and watch hours of YouTube videos, you can learn every thing you’ll ever need to know about turning your idea into reality right here in this manual. “How long, how much and what do I need to do” is basically what we try to answer for every step of the way.
The steps in this book seem extremely practical. For example, the first section is all about validating that idea before you even start making a product. This is a very critical stage in any business: don’t waste money on a bad idea. It’s a terribly important step and I’m very glad this is right at the top.
After that, the book deals with the practical matters of producing the product itself, with sections on prototyping, moving from prototype to manufacturing and even packaging and marketing.
