
WASP announced a new project called “Shamballa”.
The Italian company produces a number of different types of delta-style 3D printers, and has done for many years. However, the core mission of the company was to produce equipment that could build structures — homes — using onsite materials in a sustainable manner.
Over the years they’ve produced 3D printers that can make use of local materials, including clay. Their robotic systems have been able to build larger structures, but now they seem to be launching a new project that is quite ambitious.
Shamballa is an eight hectare site in northern Italy where they will build a series of sustainable structures. WASP explains:
“Shamballa will be located on the hills of northern Italy, on a regenerated eight-hectare agricultural site, now dedicated to hosting real solutions for sustainable living: self-sufficient structures, raw earth architecture, and spaces for research and biodiversity preservation. The project is rooted in WASP’s vision: to use technology ethically and regeneratively, in service of both people and the planet, promoting new models of sustainable and accessible living.“
The very first buildings will comprise a 3D printed farm, called “Itaca”, along with a conference hall.

WASP said the project is set to officially open in spring of next year.
We don’t know much more about the project, as it is clearly in the early stages of development. If successful, it could set a benchmark for use of sustainable local materials when 3D printing large structures.
