Design of the Week: 2-string Piezoelectric Violin

This week’s selection is Monad Studio’s incredible 2-string Piezoelectric Violin.

Monad studio is a group we’re familiar with, having previously selected one of their works, “Stuck Together Pieces”, as Design of the week last year. Principals Eric Goldemberg and Veronica Zalcberg of Monad Studio have produced a number of incredible works, and the 2-string Piezoelectric Violin is one of them.

The violin is one of five musical instruments made for a recent art installation. At present, the violin is a prototype, but can be “made to order”, if someone wishes to have one.

Evidently the set of instruments, including the violin, will be going on a world tour soon.

Why build such a strange instrument? According to the designers, it’s inspired by an ecosystem theme, in which “strange roots grow over other trees and become one with the host”. We’ve seen this style before in their previous works, which are equally interesting and unusual.

According to The Guardian, the studio has been approached by other musicians requesting production of custom instruments in the same way. It may be that this studio ends up specializing in this niche market.
