AML3D opened a new technology facility in the US.
The Australian company produces industrial metal 3D printers using the wire arc manufacturing (WAM) process. Their ARCEMY system uses a WAM toolhead on a robotic arm to deposit melted metal to form 3D objects.
The company has been rapidly growing, and as a publicly traded operation, it appears on our weekly leaderboard. They’re currently in position ten, just behind 3D Systems, up significantly since we began tracking them.
AML3D has had significant success in the military area, where the ability to quickly 3D print larger metal objects is increasingly desirable.
However, there’s been one catch: as a company located outside of the USA, they have had challenges addressing the US market. Imported parts and equipment would be subject to recent tariffs, for example. In addition, the US military prefers and sometimes requires products to be US-produced.
Those problems should be partially solved with the opening of AML3D’s new office in Stow, Ohio, which is located between Akron and Cleveland.
AML3D explained what’s going on at the new office:
“The facility houses advanced manufacturing systems serving defense, aerospace, and energy applications, and supplies manufacturing machines to commercial manufacturers across the United States. Two AML3D systems currently operate at the U.S. Navy’s Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence for research and development of next-generation capabilities. The facility’s opening aligns with the growing importance of AUKUS defense cooperation and directly supports submarine programs central to maintaining strategic stability in the Indo-Pacific region.”
This will allow the company to produce metal parts for the US defence industry directly in the US. They say the new facility will also create a number of local jobs for “skilled technicians, engineers, and manufacturing specialists”.
AML3D CEO Sean Ebert explained:
“AML3D’s investment in Ohio demonstrates the practical benefits of the AUKUS partnership. This facility enables us to support all three AUKUS nations while strengthening the allied defense industrial base through advanced manufacturing technologies developed in Australia and now deployed in America.”
It seems that they may also be building ARCEMY systems at the Ohio facility. During the open ceremony, they highlighted a new advanced manufacturing system for the Tennessee Valley Authority.
This step will almost certainly result in a boost to growth for AML3D, at least in the US.
