Mergers & Acquisitions for Dummies [Source: Amazon]

This week’s selection is “Mergers & Acquisitions For Dummies” by Bill Snow.

This is another entry in the Dummies series, which attempts to make complex matters straightforward in their easy-to-read books. In this version, Snow examines the science of mergers and acquisitions. Basically, that’s all of the things that happen when two companies get together.

I’ve been part of multiple mergers and acquisitions over the years, and it is indeed a complex topic, but not one that everyone requires advice doing. As you may have guessed by now, this is most definitely NOT a 3D printing book.

But it could be useful for several companies in the space that consider merging with or acquiring others: perhaps the folks at Stratasys or 3D Systems may be able to gain some advice from this book?

More seriously, those companies more than likely have a bevy of experts, consultants and experienced hands working on their activities. However, mergers also occur at the small scale.

Consider the case where a 3D printing entrepreneur is operating a small print farm. Then they get together with a freelance 3D designer who develops content and decide to merge operations. The two functions are complementary, but how, exactly would operations be melded together?

That’s what this book is about: putting companies together, both large and very small.

In the book Snow lays out a sequence of activities that should be undertaken by those involved in a merger (or acquisition). These include pre-planning, marketing, selling, closing and more. There are many aspects considered, and smaller businesses can certainly benefit from this knowledge prior to getting deep into a merger.

If you’re a small 3D print business that’s considering a merger, you might want to cruise through this book to gain an appreciation of what has to take place to succeed.
