The Bambu Diaper 3D print [Source: MakerWorld]

This week’s selection is the Bambu Diaper by MakerWorld contributor HackMan.

A diaper? For a 3D printer? What’s that all about?

Anyone who’s operated a desktop FFF 3D printer knows that there will eventually be an accumulation of stray bits around the device. These are small droppings from the nozzle, bits that fall off an ongoing print and possibly snipped off filament segments.

Normally this isn’t a problem: you just sweep them up and you’re done. You do want to get rid of them because in some machine these little bits can fall into the motion system, messing things up.

However, the world changed somewhat with the explosion of enclosed 3D printers. Unlike the open gantry systems of the past, it is now much more difficult to sweep out those bits — and sometimes even to see them. They tend to accumulate at the bottom of the build chamber, underneath the print plate. While it’s less likely they will screw up the motion system — CoreXY mechanisms are typically at the top — they should still be removed.

Unfortunately some build chambers have irregular bottoms with small niches that makes it tricky to remove all of those bits.

Enter the Bambu Diaper, a 3D printable surface that fits at the bottom of the build chamber. Bits fall down and land on the removable diaper. Simply pull out the diaper periodically and shake off the bits and you’ve perfectly cleaned the build chamber.

HackMan has designed this version to fit the P1S, although it may also fit the X1C as well.

Designed in four 3D printable parts, they must be then assembled using eight M3x6 bolts — by definition the diaper is bigger than the print plate.

HackMan recommends printing this item in ABS (or ASA I suppose), as that material is more resistant to heat — some print jobs might heat the build chamber to the point where PLA may soften, it depends on your printing.

If you have been troubled by material messes in the bottom of your 3D printer, the Bambu Diaper might be just what you need.
