
I bumped into a new 3D-printed application: supportive seating.
We’ve seen 3D print in the seating area a few times before, such as 3D-printed furniture and advanced seats for bicycles. But the “Support Seating Technology” from Kalogon is a bit different.
The idea is to provide a specialized seat cushion for people who are persistently seated, such as those in wheelchairs. These people sometimes develop circulation issues because of the constant pressure on their butt.
Their technology includes a pressure management system that provides “targeted pressure relief” at specific intervals. That should, as they say, “revascularize tissue and restore blood flow.”
It’s really a “smart seat” that “adapts to you”, which is quite different from the typical seats we use daily. We have to adapt to them.
How is the seat prepared? They explain:
“Verro Variable-Density Lattice (Lattice) is made from Kalogon’s variable-density lattice technology. This material is printed with varied firmness for locally customized support and reliefs, allowing each cushion to be soft where relief is needed and firm where support is needed. This revolutionary material is hydrophobic, airflow-friendly for microclimate, and super easy to clean.”
But before printing, one must go through their configuration platform, which collects a series of measurements and option selections to arrive at a custom design, which is then 3D-printed for the customer.
We’ve already seen systems that measure feet to make absolutely perfectly fitting shoes; here we have the same process, except it’s for your butt.
This is quite an interesting application, which extends the world of customized 3D-printed products.
