Meshy.ai has released a new model, Meshy 6.

The popular online 3D generative service allows users to easily create 3D models from text or 2D image input. It’s a very powerful tool that literally anyone can use. The controls are straightforward and there is plenty of visual feedback as you create your 3D models.

Like most AI services, Meshy.ai periodically updates their generative models. This week they introduced Meshy 6 as a preview.

What’s new with Meshy 6? They explain:

“Meshy 6 Preview delivers significant improvements in mesh quality, with major enhancements to:

Characters/Organic Models: Brings richer surface details, more accurate anatomy, more expressive poses and more vivid expressions.
Hard-Surface Models: Achieves better edge sharpness and a cleaner, more accurate overall structure.
Accuracy: Generates more precise and detailed geometry, providing the foundation for high-fidelity assets.”

At top you can see a comparison from a 3D model generated with the current Meshy 5 model on the left, and the same generation on the right using Meshy 6. There is considerable more detail present.

Does it really work? I gave it a try with a test image that I’ve been using. In Meshy.ai, you upload the image and provide a short prompt. Then it goes away for a minute or so to generate the 3D model. You can then download the completed 3D model.

On the left is what I get from an earlier AI model from Meshy.ai, Meshy 5. On the right is a 3D model from the same image generated by Meshy 6.

There is a very substantial increase in detail. The newer model seems able to generate all kinds of fine details. I am quite impressed. The generated model even shows detail on the back of the head, an area not even seen in the 2D image.

Anyone can use Meshy.ai, with some caveats. It is a paid subscription service with a number of different levels. However, they do offer a free tier with 100 “credits” available each month. The free tier allows for up to ten downloads per month. That’s likely more than sufficient for most casual users.

There’s one catch, however: to download models made by a new Meshy.ai model (like Meshy 6), you must be on a paid plan. This means that free users will have to wait a while for download ability on those very fine Meshy 6 3D models.
