It seems that BCN3D has been rescued.
The Spanish company has produced 3D printers for many years, initially simple desktop units, but later evolving into professional and industrial equipment. However, they encountered financial difficulties and some months ago they declared bankruptcy.
Later reports indicated a local investment group expressed interest in acquiring BCN3D and its assets. The then-unnamed group was led by a local university professor and included a number of investment firms. However, it was unclear at the time whether this proposal would go through, as it had to be approved by regulators.
Now we learn that the deal did in fact go through, as BCN3D announced that it had been fully acquired by Quantum. What is Quantum? Here’s their description:
“Quantum is a newly established entity backed by private investors, supported by Sorigué, Banasegur (Sabseg Group), Terberfer, and Inversions Vall (a company owned by shareholders of the Vall Companys agri-food group). Its mission is to drive strategic industrial assets through long-term investment and operational expertise.”
These are the same parties that were rumoured to be involved in the earlier report, but now they’ve created a new entity, Quantum, as the vehicle for acquisition.
BCN3D explained:
“The acquisition has been formally approved and completed through the appropriate legal proceedings, guaranteeing the continuity of operations, full team retention, and a strong foundation for the future.”
So it appears that the entire BCN3D operation, including products, technologies, staff, and even all facilities, are now owned by Quantum. Quantum intends on continuing the roadmap for BCN3D’s technologies, “under a renewed, future-ready structure.” It’s not clear what that might mean.
While this is good news for BCN3D staff and customers, something will have to change at the company. If not, the new owners will suffer the same fate. It’s a rapidly changing industry, and companies must constantly adapt to keep up with the increasingly intense competition.
