Artec 3D introduced a new industrial 3D scanner, the Artec Point II.
Artec 3D is one of the largest manufacturers of 3D scanners, and they currently offer quite a range of equipment. Their product lines cover most of the possible applications of 3D scanning, ranging from casual capture to scenery to industrial metrology.
The new Artec Point II is an industrial device intended for metrology: the process of ensuring parts produced actually meet required tolerances.
It’s a handheld device that inherits much of its predecessor, the Artec Point. However, there are some notable differences in performance.
The most interesting upgrade in the Artec Point II seems to be the laser power. The device blasts blue laser lines at targets to observe how those beams follow the surface, and thus an ability to compute the geometry of the subject.
Artec 3D explained that the Artec Point II has effectively double the laser capacity, able to display 54 lines during high-speed scanning, and 17 during high-resolution captures. This generates much more scan data, and they say the capture rate can go up as high as 5.8M points per second.
This extra data results in denser point clouds, which in turn produce more accurate 3D models when converted from points to mesh.
This accuracy is confirmed by the device’s compliance with VDI/VDE 2634 and JJF 1951 standards, and that leads to the metrology angle: this device can more accurately scan parts and therefore be highly useful for part geometry verification.
Artec 3D has also made this device robust: it has an IP50 rating for dust protection, as well as a very wide operating temperature range, making it suitable for use in factory settings.
The stated accuracy is a mere 0.02mm, and the volumetric accuracy is 0.015mm plus 0.035mm/m. That is excellent when you consider the scanning area is 700 x 600 mm.
The device weighs 570 g, so it is relatively lightweight as far as handheld 3D scanners go. However, as you can see in the top image, there is a strap to hold it tight to the operator’s hand. I don’t think I’ve seen another handheld 3D scanner with that feature.
As you would expect, the Artec Point II works with the company’s Artec Studio software, which is one of the most powerful 3D scan software suites on the market.
Finally, the list price for the Artec 3D Point II is US$29,900, and it is available right now.
