I’m trying another online 3D model generator, STLGears.

The purpose of this tool is to automatically generate precise STL 3D models of various types of gears using parameters provided by you.

There are quite a few types of gears available, more than I thought existed:

  • Double helical gear
  • Spur gear
  • Helical gear
  • Internal double helical gear
  • Internal spur gear
  • Internal helical gear
  • Rack
  • 90-degree bevel gear

Each one of these provides a list of relevant parameters for the design. For example, the Double helical gear requires you to specify:

  • Helical system (radial or normal)
  • Helix angle
  • Module (tooth size)
  • Number of teeth
  • Pressure angle
  • Gear length
  • Profile shift
  • Hole type (none, hollow, squared, hexagonal, circular, or keyway)

As you can see, these parameters are very specific to this type of gear. You’ll see different parameters for each of the gear types.

After you have the parameters set properly, just hit “Download Gear”, and you will instantly have the 3D model file, ready to print.

I found the models to be properly formed, and they fit in the slicer easily.

There’s also an interesting “reverse” feature: you can drop one of the STL files into STLGears, and it will figure out the original parameters you used to create it. This would be ideal if you forget them.

I found the tooltips to be quite useful, as they explain some of the lesser-known parameters. With these tips, anyone can use STLGears.

Even better, there’s a theory section where all of the parameters are explained in detail, including diagrams.

If you need some 3D models of gears for your project, I recommend using STLGears — it’s very easy to use, works properly, and doesn’t cost anything. Thank you, Juan Gras, for developing this very useful tool!
