We were directed to another 3D model repository I hadn’t previously seen, 3Dmodels.org.
Everyone is familiar with the big players in the 3D model space: MakerWorld, Printables, Thingiverse, MyMiniFactory, etc. But there are also multiple smaller players that often provide access to high-grade niche 3D models you can’t find elsewhere.
One of them is 3Dmodels.org.
As of this writing, the site indicates they have a storehouse of over 138,000 3D models. That’s far, far less than the millions found on the major sites, but still quite an impressive amount. Many niche sites have only a few hundred 3D models.
The other difference here is that 3Dmodels.org is not dedicated to 3D printable models. In fact, the primary use seems to be for provision of visual assets for digital applications, rather than 3D printing. That said, many of the 3D models can indeed be easily 3D printed.
The site is divided into 28 major categories, such as characters, anatomy, trucks, animals, plants, etc. There are some interesting categories you won’t see elsewhere, such as stadiums.
There is a single category called “Models for 3D Printing”, which holds about 1500 3D models. It’s a strange mix of two kinds of models: very simple 3D models like molds, and enormously complex 3D models of specific vehicles.
You’ll note that the entries on 3Dmodels.org are all for sale, as this is not a free site subsidized by a 3D printer manufacturer, for example. Some of the prices are quite high: vehicle 3D models are typically US$295 each.
Why so high as compared to other 3D model sites? It’s because you can download the CAD files for the design. That opens up the possibility of editing the design yourself, including, for example, changing the pose on a character. I found one 3D model that offered no less than 35 different CAD file formats, so it is almost certain to be compatible with any software you use.
Another interesting feature is that some 3D models are marked as “Human Made”, indicating that no AI tools were used to create them. That is important for some.
I found 3Dmodels.org to have quite a range of unique 3D models you may not be able to find elsewhere, if you are willing to pay for them.
