The number of 3DCP projects worldwide is expanding quickly.
Automate Construction Journalist Jarret Gross has been compiling known 3DCP projects and presented an interim analysis recently. At the top, you can see his chart of where these projects have taken place around the world.
He writes on LinkedIn:
“50% done mapping every construction automation company and project. Shoutout to the Netherlands for elite construction innovation density.
Most people in the industry would struggle to name 20 players in the game. Few realize the insane market penetration 3DCP and other construction robots have achieved over the past 5 years.
The growth rate is wild, maybe not as fast as RAM demand but a true phenomenon in the history of construction.”
The growth rate is higher than you’d guess, largely because the users are not individuals, but instead regional construction companies that adopt 3DCP technology over time. Because they are regional you don’t hear much about them in other regions. After initial experiments to prove out the technology and ensure they understand where it can and cannot be used, then they offer it to customers.
Gross’s chart is quite interesting because we already see clusters of activity forming. It appears the majority of the activity is taking place in:
- Persian Gulf
- Northern Europe
- China
- Japan
- Western Australia
- US East Coast
- US West Coast
- Texas
- Florida
This tracks with the notion that 3DCP tends to be regional: construction companies (the users in this scenario) operate in local areas where they can more easily relocate the large machines.
There are sprinklings of projects elsewhere, but, as Gross explains, there will be many more projects. In fact, the statistics presented represent only half of his data.
I’m interested to see an updated version of this chart that includes all the data.
