Artec 3D launched a new version of their popular 3D scanning software, Artec Studio, now version 20.

This powerful software has been undergoing a bit of an evolution. Initially, it was simply the software required to operate the company’s many hardware 3D scanner products.

Recent versions of Artec Studio have expanded the usage beyond just handling the company’s 3D scanners. They include a photogrammetry system that can accept images from any source and then leverage their powerful 3D algorithms to produce and edit detailed 3D models.

The latest version, Artec Studio 20, follows this trajectory and provides quite a number of important new features.

One feature is “Workflows”. It’s now possible to customize workflows — 3D scanning is a multistep process — to match operator needs. This will be especially useful in factory situations where repeated scanning operations are required. Artec 3D said that Workflows can help operators process data up to 70% faster and “go from captured data to a 3D model in one click”.

Artec Studio 20 also makes some improvements for hardware 3D scanners. For example, the real-time fusion feature previously only for the Artec Leo 3D scanner is now also available for the Artec Spider II 3D scanner. Similarly, the live decimation feature that reduces the size of 3D scan data without fidelity loss is also available for the Spider II.

Similar improvements to the operation of various Artec 3D scanners are now provided by Artec Studio 20.

The photogrammetry tool has several improvements:

  • Refined masking for more realistic 3D models
  • Masking for texturing better isolates objects from backgrounds
  • Multiple camera type data now allowed in projects
  • GPU memory optimization uses hardware more efficiently

These are substantial improvements, and I am very curious to know how Artec Studio is competing against standalone photogrammetry tools. This is a burgeoning market, particularly with drone footage for scanning large-scale objects and structures.

It may be that Artec 3D wants a piece of that action, and by enabling Artec Studio to handle photogrammetry from different media sources, they are doing just that.

Artec Studio 20 is now available.
