This week’s selection is the Gyro 7 Printable Jointed Cat by Printables contributor Neybao.

Neybao is a prolific contributor to Printables, with, as of this writing, some 20 unique models in his portfolio. Most of them are unusual mechanical device projects or household gadgets.

One of the most popular models the Gyro 7 Printable Jointed Cat. It’s cat, to be sure, but the limbs are articulated and thus the cat can be placed in a variety of poses.

This is a relatively complex print because there are almost 50 parts to print — and fortunately they can all fit on a standard build plate, as shown here. Even better, the cat is designed to be printed without the need for support structures.

Some of the parts are small, so Neybao has provided an option to print the parts in connected form as shown above. This is quite reminiscent of the old plastic models that had all parts attached in this way. However, it would require a bit more finishing work to smooth out the joint marks on each part.

There are some printing quirks on this model. Neybao recommends using PETG instead of PLA because the rigidity of PLA will make assembly more challenging. It’s also recommended to print with thinner layers to make the joints operate more smoothly.

Assembly involves quite a few steps, and fortunately Neybao has provided a very detailed set of instructions in the Printables entry, complete with images.

This is certainly a fun project that results in a cool posable cat.
