This week’s selection is “Infill Heritage” by BBA Studio and partners.

BigRep was one of the partners on the project, along with research lab BBOfficina and others providing lighting, installation, recycling, and other services.

The artistic work was initially displayed at Milan Design Week, but is now installed at BBOfficina in Milan.

It is a series of panels arranged in concentric arcs. Combined with lighting, the pieces brightly shine through the transparent material used to 3D print them.

BigRep explains the design goals behind the project:

“The project Infill Heritage, as the name suggests, predominantly uses infill as both structural support and to reframe Piero Portaluppi’s signature ornamental motifs in a modern-day setting. Drawing from his realized and unrealized works, including the arch-shaped building on Via Salvini/Corso Venezia and his conceptual design for the S.T.T.S. building on Corso Sempione, BBA Studio uses parametric modeling and large-scale 3D printing to revive Portaluppi’s visual language.”

BigRep printed the pieces on one of their STUDIO G2 devices, which have a large build volume of 1000 x 500 x 500 mm. The G2 is also fully enclosed, which makes it easier to 3D print larger objects without fear of warping.

For this project, the team selected a translucent PETG material, not only for ease of printing but also because the translucent material would easily transmit light.

Infill Heritage is a prime example of how large-format 3D printing can be leveraged by artists to create huge works for public display.
