Dyemansion has made an acquisition.

The company has come a long way from their beginnings as a supplier of coloring systems for 3D printing. This is typically required when printing white nylon objects, and there’s quite a science to ensuring the colors are consistent over long periods.

Since that beginning, Dyemansion has slowly moved into a full feature 3D print post processing company. Today in addition to color solutions they also offer equipment to clean (remove powder) and smooth (surface processing). These apply to powder-based 3D print processes, and are quite scalable, even in production environments.

Dyemansion currently uses two different processes for smoothing: a mechanical blasting process, and a vapour smoothing process that is more suitable for flexible materials.

ASM is a small German company, launched only a few years ago, that produces the VX1, a small and relatively inexpensive unit. The VX1 can vapor smooth PA11, PA12 and TPU in the same machine. They say the VX1 can provide ”professional-grade vapor smoothing at a fraction of the cost.”

The VX1 is smaller than the vapor units currently sold by Dyemansion. This means that the addition of ASM’s product will provide Dyemansion with a new market segment to serve companies requiring smaller smoothing solutions. Dyemansion explains:

“Through this acquisition, DyeMansion is expanding its vapor smoothing portfolio with an entry-level production solution for Vapor Smoothing that is also addressing the growing segment of small-scale production environments. The vapor smoothing segment represents the largest share of the AM post-processing market, and with the addition of ASM’s VX1, DyeMansion now offers the most comprehensive and strongest vapor smoothing portfolio – covering three product levels from entry to high industrial solutions: VX1, Powerfuse S Manual, and Powerfuse S with automatic loading.”

This is a good move by Dyemansion as it should dramatically expand their potential market. It’s also a good move for AMS, as it provides a larger network of distributors to move the VX1.
