Elegoo announced a new resin 3D printer, the Saturn 4 Ultra 16K.

Elegoo is no stranger to resin 3D printers, having developed and sold numerous models in their Mars, Saturn, and Jupiter series. The new Saturn 4 Ultra 16K inherits much of the technology developed from prior models and introduces some rather interesting new features.

The Ultra 16K has quite a healthy build volume for a desktop resin 3D printer, having a volume of 211.68 x 118.37 x 220mm. That is comparable to many desktop FFF 3D printers and larger than some “mini” versions.

The resolution on the Ultra 16K is notable, and that’s due to the 10” 16K mono LCD panel. This provides a pixel size of 0.014 x 0.019 mm, which is incredibly small. I haven’t seen prints from this machine yet, but it’s quite likely you will not be able to perceive layer lines due to this very fine resolution.

The Ultra 16K inherits the Tilt Release technology from prior Elegoo systems. This feature tips the build plate slightly during peel operations, speeding up the process significantly.

A new feature on the Ultra 16K is resin heating. The idea is to maintain resin at a temperature of 30°C, which provides a number of advantages.

The added heat makes the resin less viscous, which helps in removing bubbles from the resin: they float upwards easier in the thinner resin. A second benefit is that layer change operations can be faster because fresh resin flows in much faster.

All of these features combine to make the Ultra 16K a very fast resin 3D printer. Elegoo states the print speed can be up to 150mm/hour. This means that the maximum print time — at the highest print speed — is only 88 minutes. That’s far faster than most FFF 3D printers for parts of that size.

Elegoo didn’t mention how the highest speed is achieved in their press release, but it’s likely that specific high-speed resins and print profiles would be required. The “normal” print speeds are no doubt a bit slower, but still very fast.

The machine also includes a number of convenience features:

  • AI camera for real-time monitoring
  • WiFi connection
  • Sensors to detect residue to avoid tank punctures
  • Automated levelling
  • Cluster printing to manage multiple units
  • Supported by Elegoo’s new SatelLite slicing software

The Saturn 4 Ultra 16K appears to be a powerful desktop resin 3D printer. With its list price at US$520, it could be quite attractive for some 3D printer operators.
