It appears that Mighty Buildings is for sale.

Mighty Buildings is a California-based construction 3D printing company that developed a unique approach over the past few years, and has built multiple homes.

However, a post on LinkedIn from the company’s Chief People officer, Jennifer Farley, said:

“Big news – Mighty Buildings is for sale. This is an incredible opportunity for strategic investors to continue the journey of revolutionizing the sustainable resilient building landscape.

To prepare for sale, a restructuring took place resulting in proven talent looking for work. If you are looking to hire talented professionals in operations, supply chain, sales, engineering (structural & mechanical), quality, architecture, material science, finance, legal or HR in the US, Mexico or Europe, please let me know, and I would be happy to make connections.”

The sale is being brokered by Rock Creek Advisors LLC, and the deadline to bid is February 14th. It appears they are selling the company’s technology and processes to the highest bidder, while a major portion of the staff have been laid off.

Mighty Building’s process is quite different from most 3DCP companies. Their concept is to build a central factory that would serve local region. The factory would 3D print building components using their proprietary polymer materials, which would then be assembled with other components into small home modules. The modules would then be trucked to building sites, and craned into position — instant house.

This is very different from other 3DCP companies that tend to partner with existing building contractors to supply them with specialized equipment for printing concrete structures on site.

What does all this mean? Some thoughts to consider.

Could this mean the regional factory approach doesn’t work? Possibly, but if so then why are they attempting to sell the whole package to a buyer?

Another possibility could be funding. Because of the nature of their process, it all depends on the central regional factory. To expand the business you must enter more regions by dropping new factories. That’s an expensive proposition, more so than just selling a 3D printer. You have to set up not only the equipment, but an entire factory, parts supply chain, delivery system, staffing, training, administration, etc.

In order to perform that expansion Mighty Buildings would require substantial investment, and that could be where the problem lies. These days it is incredibly challenging to source large investments. The VC community has completely soured on 3D print technology, largely because of several over-funded ventures that have financially collapsed over the past couple of years.

Those investors will remember the fate of previous investments in the technology, and likely want to stay clear.

That might have put Mighty Buildings into a difficult position: to grow they need cash, and they can’t get enough, either from investors or their existing infrastructure.

Perhaps they decided to let someone else run with the technology, someone that has better access to funding than they do themselves.

I’m wondering what company may purchase Mighty Buildings? The ideal candidate would be a very large firm in the construction industry that believes in the concept — and is able to self fund its expansion.
