You’ve heard of Patreon — but now there is Printreon!
Patreon is that platform for makers to collect subscriptions from supporters. The platform offers the ability to offer tiers of support, and can handle certain deliverables, like videos, files, and podcasts.
But they don’t handle 3D models very well.
That’s where the new Printreon comes in. It’s basically Patreon, but built for distributing 3D model files.
From a user standpoint, you would sign into Printreon and subscribe to your favourite designers for a monthly fee. The designers would then create content regularly, and it would be downloadable by their subscribers.
Printreon’s pitch is this: “Sell your STLs on a monthly membership”.
How is this better than other platforms? Basically, the site handles all the situations that might appear when storing and delivering 3D model files. Some feature highlights:
- Native STL & 3MF: Upload .stl, .3mf, .obj, and .zip — with previews, tags, and categories made for makers.
- Protected downloads: Files are never just a public URL. Access is verified by tier, on every download.
- Tiered memberships: Supporter, Standard, Premium Vault, Commercial Licence — your structure, your prices.
- Tags for “print tested”, “digitally sculpted”, and “ai assisted”
- No need for weird “glue” between applications, it’s all in the Printreon workflow
- Financial processing aspects included
- Customizable designer pages
This looks like quite a good idea, and it appears it was vibe-coded using the Lovable platform.
However, there are some very big challenges.
First, Patreon itself could simply implement a 3D model handling feature, and there would suddenly be no need for Printreon.
Second, Printreon is a marketplace where you need designers to attract patrons, and patrons to attract designers. It’s incredibly hard to jump-start that cycle, and many attempts have failed in the past.
Third, there are services that do compete in indirect ways with Printreon, such as MyMiniFactory.
Finally, I logged into Printreon myself to check it out, and it seems well designed, but there was a major issue: there is no content as far as I can tell. There does not appear to be any designers providing content at this time.
However, the site is clearly in “BETA” stage and has not been widely publicized. It seems the site is just starting up.
We will have to check back into Printreon in a couple of months to see how much growth has taken place.
