More consolidation in the 3D CAD market: Dassault Systèmes is acquiring Exa.

Dassault Systèmes is well known as the producer of Solidworks, but also many other 3D design and analysis products that are very popular and used worldwide by engineers and designers.

Who is Exa? The US-based company has produced powerful engineering simulation software products since 1991, growing to over USD$60M in revenue in recent years. Their simulation and visualization products can simulate fluid dynamic flows through and around 3D designs in very accurate detail. Their products are often used by designers who create parts in Solidworks, for example.

But now Exa’s product line, including their flagship PowerFLOW simulation system, will be part of Dassault Systèmes.

What are Dassault Systèmes intentions? They say this:

With the addition of Exa, Dassault Systèmes’ 3DEXPERIENCE platform will provide customers with a proven, diverse portfolio of combined Lattice Boltzmann fluid simulation technologies, as well as Exa’s fully industrialized solutions and nearly 350 highly experienced simulation professionals. This set of solutions solves challenging fluids problems faster and more accurately than traditional methods for aerodynamics, aeroacoustics, thermal management, and a growing list of applications in other industries.

In other words, Exa’s products will become part of 3DEXPERIENCE business platform, which covers off a wide variety of solutions for industry, “from marketing to sales to engineering”, but I suspect Exa’s products will mostly be in the engineering realm.
