This week’s selection is Clippy by MakerWorld contributor PrintBusters.
Older readers will be very familiar with Clippy. It was a cartoonish “office assistant” embedded into Microsoft Office in Windows many, many years ago. Back then there was no AI functionality, so Clippy was pretty dumb. Worse, it was quite embarrassing, making annoying interruptions at inopportune moments and basically not understanding the user. You can read more about the history of Clippy here.
Clippy lasted until 2004, when it was discontinued. However, since then it has become a symbol for a potentially good technology idea that goes very, very wrong.
And now you can have your own Clippy right on your desktop — in physical form.
You’ll notice that Clippy is a multicolor 3D model, but it does not require a multicolor 3D printer. That’s because the model is broken down into eight separate parts that can be printed separately, each with the appropriate color.
The parts do not have snap connectors, so you must use glue to stick the parts together. For PLA prints, use standard PVA glue (superglue works fine), but for ABS or ASA use an ABS-type glue.
Once finished, you will have Clippy on your desk, observing you work. But this time, it won’t interrupt you.
