This week’s selection is the beautiful 3D printed bathtub by designer Sebastian Hermann.

Hermann is part of Sandhelden GmbH, a design firm specializing in utilizing 3D printing as a medium for their visions. They say:

“Three things particularly inspired us when we decided to become Sandhelden: our passion for good design, our knowledge of the infinite technical and aesthetic possibilities of 3D printing, and the lack of understanding for the absolute feel-good area in the house – the bathroom – only standard mass produced was offered. We wanted to change that. Sustainable, of the highest quality and unique, made of a raw material whose versatile formability is as fascinating as its processability to astonishingly noble material: sand.

The idea of making sand baths that are as individual as your personality and design preferences has now become a reality. Elegant, functional and only following your wishes.”

Sandhelden is a good name for this company, as it translates from German to English as “Sand Heroes”, something they definitely seem to be.

We spoke with them recently and found that they formed only four years ago and are based in Munich. They operate as a service provider, creating unusual designs and having them 3D printed on ExOne equipment. After printing they employ their specialized talents to post-process the raw prints, including infiltration with special resins, sanding and coating, which resists scratches and provides much greater strength. This transforms them into the incredible objects seen here.

Along with their tub, the company has produced many other amazing 3D printed designs, including this stagger-leveled sink:

Or this more conventional sink:

And we could not forget their skull design:

The company seems to operate on a custom design basis, so if you have an unusual design in mind, or just want to get one, I would not hesitate to contact these imaginative sand heroes.
