After thirty years, the Wohlers Report is going full digital.

Anyone in the 3D print industry will be familiar with Terry Wohlers, who has been publishing industry statistics and analysis for literally decades. Each year, his organization publishes the “Wohlers Report”, which contains a mass of information about the state of the industry. It’s highly useful for manufacturers, industry sales, and more.

Perhaps I shouldn’t say “his organization”, since the original organization, Wohlers Associates, was acquired by ASTM a few years ago. Nevertheless, the production of the Wohlers Report remains much the same as before the acquisition.

But this year there is a big difference: the report is being delivered in a very different manner. Instead of sending out a PDF or printed copy, buyers will instead gain access to the data through ASTM’s digital platform. This is an expected move as ASTM hinted at this earlier.

The process is to pay for a subscription plan, and then you gain access to the platform. Several levels of plans are available, but mostly it is a one-year subscription for access. That makes sense, since the data is really useful only for the year of issue: it’s an annual report, after all.

If you really, really want a physical copy, ASTM will sell you a printed copy. But I suspect few will select that option, and even fewer in the future.

According to ASTM, the subscription provides access to multiple useful tools, including:

  • Wohlers Report 2026: The 31st consecutive annual installment of comprehensive market intelligence for the global Additive Manufacturing (AM) industry. Unlike previous years, this edition is not a standalone PDF, but a digital publication that provides structured analysis, commentary, and market sizing.
  • ASTM Market Intelligence Platform: A modern digital delivery system powered by ASTM International that complements the traditional report model with continuous, timely data, interactive content, and analytical tools. It hosts the Wohlers Report alongside interactive data and insights.
  • Market Explorer: A suite of complementary interactive modules available within the platform (specifically for Professional and Enterprise plans). Distinct from the written report, these tools allow users to interact directly with underlying data through self-service filtering, segmentation, comparisons, and custom analysis.
  • Company Tracker: Distinct from the larger ASTM Market Intelligence Platform and the Market Explorer, the Company Tracker is a dedicated database of companies from across the AM ecosystem. Users can explore the data via self-service filtering, segmentation, and geographic views. This module is exclusively for Enterprise users, who can export the data into .xls or .csv format.
  • Native Reader: The proprietary online viewer used to access the Wohlers Report 2026. It replaces downloadable PDFs to protect intellectual property and facilitates a dynamic reading experience that integrates data modules. It does not support offline reading.

For most buyers, this move should not affect their use of the Wohlers Report much at all. ASTM likely chose this approach to prevent buyers from sharing the Wohlers Report with others, and anyone who has regularly done so will no longer have that option. Could you share a login? The ASTM FAQ answers the question about sharing logins:

“No. Individual logins are tied to a specific user and cannot be shared. However, the Enterprise plan includes access for up to 10 individual users from the same email domain.”

As far as I can tell, pricing for the new platform has not yet been announced.
