This week’s selection is “Autodesk Fusion 360: A Step-By-Step Tutorial Guide for Beginners (2024 Edition)” by SDCAD Academy.

Autodesk’s Fusion 360 is one of the most popular 3D CAD tools for designers, and there’s a good reason — or two — for that.

First, it’s an incredibly comprehensive tool, including not only 3D modeling, but different forms including solid, sheet metal, sculpting and more. It also includes CAM functionality, so that you can directly prepare jobs for your manufacturing equipment. You can choose the right tool for the job, and it’s almost like there are multiple tools within the package. In fact, that’s why it’s called “Fusion”: several tools have been fused together into a single package.

The specific 3D tools within Fusion 360 are quite powerful and it’s able to help design almost anything, including mechanical systems. For advanced users it’s also possible to do generative design using Autodesk’s cloud system.

The second reason is access. As you might expect, Autodesk provides a subscription service for commercial use that is easy to use for many companies. The cloud-based nature of the tools ensures your copy of Fusion 360 is always up to date with the latest fixes and feature updates.

However, Autodesk also provides for free access to Fusion 360 for certain non-commercial activities. This has made it extremely popular among hobbyists. It’s rare for a sophisticated tool to be used by both industry and hobbyists, but here we are.

This book is targeted at new users of Autodesk Fusion 360, and takes the reader on a step-by-step journey from zero to modeling capability. There are several chapters gradually explaining more complex approaches for creating 3D solids, followed by a long tutorial on how to do assemblies of moving parts.

If you’re considering getting into Autodesk Fusion 360, this book just might be for you.
