Thingiverse Adds SOLIDWORKS for Makers Discount

Thingiverse now has a deal for SOLIDWORKS.

Thingiverse has undergone a wild series of corporate changes since its launch way back in 2008 by MakerBot. Since then, it has been under the control of several parties, but most recently, it was acquired by MyMiniFactory.

There haven’t been many changes to Thingiverse since the acquisition, so I’ve been watching for something to happen.

Then something did happen.

Now, if you go to their membership page (which honestly is a bit hard to find), you will see two options: Supporter and Family. It’s really a way to eliminate the adverts that frequently appear in Thingiverse search listings, with the Family option as a kind of bulk purchase.

But they’ve added something new: either option now gets you a 50% discount off of a SOLIDWORKS for Makers license.

SOLIDWORKS is perhaps the most powerful CAD tool on the planet, as it has the most features available. SOLIDWORKS for Makers is a special version for hobbyists. Here’s how they describe it:

“SOLIDWORKS for Makers provides full-functionality 3D CAD tools for personal use for just $48 USD a year. It’s perfect for makers, hobbyists, and DIY enthusiasts who generate less than $2,000 USD in annual revenue from their projects. Choose from two comprehensive design packages that offer everything you need for your non-commercial projects. Enjoy the power and precision of SOLIDWORKS for personal use.”

Here’s the deal: if you become a Thingiverse member, you’ll pay only US$24 for a full year of SOLIDWORKS, two dollars per month. Note that this is only for the first subscription year, as you’ll later revert to the full US$48 price.

So if you’re looking for a way to get SOLIDWORKS for Makers only at a discount, this isn’t it because you’re also paying for the Thingiverse membership. But if you are considering supporting the new Thingiverse, then perhaps this could be a great perk.
