ASTM has launched an interesting AM video series.
ASTM’s Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence has a new video series called “Manufacturing Unlimited”, which investigates professional additive manufacturing activities at real production sites.
The series, which is published on YouTube, includes four episodes as of this writing. Each involves host Peter Zelinski visiting a specific site and interviewing the principals about their issues, solutions, and operations.
The episodes so far:
- Episode 1: Peter visits Orizon Aerostructures to explore how Flexxbotics Inc. is helping connect machining, automation, quality, tooling, and shop management into a unified digital system.
- Episode 2: Peter visits a Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Austin, Texas, where the ReCreateIt initiative is turning discarded plastic into household goods through large-format 3D printing.
- Episode 3: Peter visits CADmore Metal in Columbia, South Carolina, where Cold Metal Fusion is being used to produce metal parts on selective laser sintering machines typically associated with polymer 3D printing.
- Episode 4: Peter visits ADDMAN, located in Statesville, North Carolina, where statistics from a large 3D printer fleet are being used to increase quality and consistency.
More videos are expected to be released over time.
This is an excellent series that should provide significant insight to viewers. There are many workshops using additive manufacturing today, but many are new and still adopting more advanced approaches.
Meanwhile, there are many established operations that have considerable expertise, and that seems to be what the video series focuses upon. By watching these entries, it’s possible a workshop may hit some new ideas and concepts previously not considered.
The videos are not long and easy to watch. If you’re an additive manufacturing professional, you might learn something new by spending a few minutes on this series.
