Design of the Week: Meth Lab RV

This week’s selection is the Meth Lab RV by Reddit contributor wangthangthursday.

“Thursday” 3D printed this item as a present. They say:

“Printed a little lab for my brother’s christmas present.”

You might be wondering what the fuss is about on this seemingly innocuous item. But you would immediately recognize this as the infamous RV meth lab used in the now-concluded Breaking Bad TV series.

In the show, the protagonists seek a secret location to perform their chemical work to produce illegal substances. Ingeniously, they decide to convert an RV into a mobile lab, which they can drive far into the desert where no one can see or interrupt their nefarious work.

You can see a short clip of the RV from this Breaking Bad sequence:

The RV has become an icon for fans of the show, even though it was destroyed in later episodes. But now it’s been recreated with 3D printing.

“Thursday” must have used views from the TV show to model the vehicle. It seems to have multiple pieces, including wheels, ladders and other parts. After 3D printing it was painted to match the show’s RV.

But to make the replication complete, the RV’s roof lifts off to expose what’s really inside: a humidity diffuser. A reservoir of water is diffused into the air trough a vent on the top of the RV.

This is an important feature, as the RV would emit noxious fumes from the top during “cooking”. In this case, however, the emissions are quite healthy.

As far as I can tell, “Thursday” has not published this 3D model, so you’ll have to simply admire it for now. But perhaps someday this design will be published and everyone can have a simulated miniature mobile meth lab on their desk.
