Elegoo announced the massive Jupiter 2 resin 3D printer.

The device, which had been rumoured for a while now, is quite large: it sports an enormous build volume of 302 x 162 x 300 mm, and uses a 14” 16K LCD panel to drive the system.

The Jupiter 2 uses a COB light source with a Fresnel collimating lens system to focus the light equally over the huge print area.

Elegoo says the system is designed for professionals and consumers, but provides both with very accurate high-resolution prints.

Layer thickness can be as small as 0.01mm, which is extremely thin. Most resin 3D printers are closer to 0.10mm layers, almost 10X larger. The layer lines from the Jupiter 2 should be basically invisible.

On the XY resolution side, they say the pixels are 0.020 x 0.026 mm, also extremely small. Normally, these figures are much higher for resin 3D printers. In all, the panel resolution is 15120 x 6230 pixels.

The extra precision implies that levelling needs to be very accurate, and for that, Elegoo has introduced a multi-point automated levelling procedure for the Jupiter 2.

By the way, the tank is also heated up to 30C to ensure resin flows freely during layer changes. This should add some speed to the printer, which apparently can print at up to 70mm/hour.

You’ll be able to see that speed by watching on their app through the Jupiter 2’s onboard 1280×720 webcam. The system also can create timelapse videos.

They also have redesigned the tank film system so that the film can be replaced “up to 10X faster”. That’s important because vat film is really a consumable on this type of machine, and all resin 3D printer operators should expect to replace the film periodically.

That is also an example of the machine’s modular design. Replaceable units are easy to work with. Elegoo explains:

“The modular design enables quick, damage-free LCD screen replacement in minutes, ensuring a smoother, more efficient workflow.”

Finally, the resin system is more advanced. The Jupiter 2 has a “smart resin management system” that automatically refills resin as levels get low. Even better, it can recycle resin (putting it back in the jug) when you need to change materials. That is one of my favourite features, because unloading resin is usually not a pleasant activity.

While Elegoo has now announced the Jupiter 2, you can’t quite order one yet. But you can sign up for discounts that will be applied once they open up ordering.

We are now testing the Jupiter 2, so stay tuned for a lengthy review coming up soon.
