Remember Prompt2CAD? It’s advanced quite a bit since my last check.
Earlier this year, I did a brief hands-on test with another AI text-to-3D service, Prompt2CAD. At the time, it sort of worked, but in the testing, it tended to generate models that weren’t exactly 3D printable.
It was — and is, however, one of the first to generate true STEP format 3D models. I was even able to import the AI-generated data directly into Autodesk Fusion for further editing. This is quite different from typical text-to-3D services that simply output a “shape”. Here, you get a parametric 3D model you can actually work with in a CAD tool.
Now, it seems that Prompt2CAD has been significantly beefed up. Developer Michele Lugano told us:
“Prompt2CAD has improved substantially since the version you tested. The biggest advances are in how the agent understands user requests and reasons about the model spatially. It can now handle relationships between parts more reliably, identify floating or intersecting components, inspect dimensions and clearances, and build significantly more detailed and coherent assemblies. Its ability to interpret reference images has also improved considerably.”
In addition, the service has expanded beyond its original scope of furniture models. It can now be used for basically any 3D object type, including housings, brackets, mechanical components, figures, etc.
My original test months ago was to create a Star Trek-inspired command chair, and the result was correct but quite simple. Here you can see that attempt, and it’s a very uncomplicated design with only five basic components.
I ran the same test prompt against the “new” Prompt2CAD and was quite surprised. I received several options for the command chair as seen at the top.
These are vastly more sophisticated than what was generated by the previous Prompt2CAD.
I’ve been looking for something like Prompt2CAD, as few others are attempting to build this type of AI-generative tool. Virtually all AI 3D services these days simply dump out a 3MF/STL file that is entirely uneditable.
The ability to generate precise dimensional parts and systems takes this game up another level. More importantly, it could eventually enable those without CAD skills to generate their own custom parts.
If that happens, then we’ll see a lot more 3D print activity.
