Revopoint has made two significant 3D scanning announcements, including a new scanner starting at only US$369.
The company has launched the RANGE 3 and RANGE 3 Pro, two handheld 3D scanners designed for capturing medium and large-sized objects. Simultaneously, Revopoint has also unveiled the upcoming MIRACO 2, a considerably more versatile scanner that combines multiple scanning technologies in one handheld system.
Both announcements occurred on October 22, with the RANGE 3 series immediately available for pre-order and the MIRACO 2 scanner to be launched later on Kickstarter.
The two product families address somewhat different needs, but both show how capable compact 3D scanning equipment has become.
RANGE 3 Captures Larger Objects
The RANGE 3 series is intended for scanning subjects that might be difficult to capture with scanners that are designed for capturing smaller subjects.
Both RANGE devices can handle a maximum scanning volume of 4 × 4 × 4 m, allowing operators to work with furniture, sculptures, automotive components or even a small group of humans.
The RANGE scanners use wide-field VCSEL near-infrared structured light, capturing an area up to 687 × 672 mm (at one meter distance) in a single frame. That’s quite a large amount of object surface to capture in one pass, and that potentially reduces the time needed to complete capture a large subject.
Both models include RGB cameras and lighting to capture surface color and texture. Color and texture can also help with scan alignment, especially when the subject’s geometry doesn’t have much variation.
Revopoint has also equipped the devices with WiFi 6 wireless connectivity and support for scanning in lighting conditions up to 100,000 lux, making outdoor capture possible. That would be important when capturing large outdoor subjects.
The RANGE 3 Pro has an additional technology: eleven parallel infrared laser lines for collecting finer geometric details. This mode supports volumetric accuracy of 0.03 mm + 0.2 mm per metre of object length, and has scanning speeds up to 105 frames per second when using NVIDIA GPU acceleration.
Both scanners are quite lightweight at approximately 200–220 g. It is possible to 3D scan large objects without tiring out your arms.
Then there’s the price. Revopoint lists the RANGE 3 at US$369 and the RANGE 3 Pro at US$459. A 5% preorder discount is available, along with an additional promotional code. This is quite a low price for a very capable handheld 3D scanner.
For 3D printer operators interested in reverse engineering, automotive customization or creating models from existing objects, these rather low prices make large-object scanning far more accessible. The low prices may attract those who have never used 3D scanners previously.
MIRACO 2 Offers Multiple Scanning Technologies
Meanwhile, Revopoint is intending on introducing the MIRACO 2 3D scanner through Kickstarter.
This is a different kind of scanner, designed to handle a wide variety of object sizes and geometries without requiring operators to change equipment.
MIRACO 2 incorporates multiple scanning modes, including 34 crossed blue laser lines for rapid capture, 15 parallel blue laser lines for finer geometry, and a single blue laser line intended for deep holes and recessed features.
There are also full-field near-infrared structured light and VCSEL scanning modes, along with a hybrid HD mode capable of collecting up to ten million points per second. That is a lot of points!
The many technologies included with the MIRACO 2 should let operators select a scanning method that works well for almost any object, whether it’s a detailed mechanical part or a much larger subject.
MIRACO 2 can also operate independently of a computer, with wired and wireless PC connections available when required. An optional photogrammetry kit supports improved dimensional accuracy when scanning larger objects.
Revopoint hasn’t yet announced final pricing for MIRACO 2, but the company has opened pre-launch registrations for its Kickstarter campaign. Super Early Bird discounts of up to 38% are advertised, along with a limited VIP deposit program offering additional benefits.
The two announcements show Revopoint addressing two different scanning scenarios. The RANGE 3 series concentrates on making larger scanning jobs affordable, while MIRACO 2 offers flexibility across different scanning methods and object types.
With the RANGE 3 starting at US$369, the notion of getting into 3D scanning is a much easier decision.
