This week’s selection is the massive Horus Lupercal by Reddit contributor HammerDoris40k.
Horus is an important character in Games Workshop’s Warhammer 40,000. The Warhammer Wiki explains the character:
“Horus, also called Horus Lupercal, or more simply The Lupercal during his lifetime by the Astartes of his Luna Wolves Legion, was one of the 20 genetically-engineered primarchs created by the Emperor of Mankind from the foundation of His own DNA before the start of the Great Crusade to lead the armies of the newborn Imperium of Man.”
This certainly has to be one of the biggest home 3D prints I’ve ever heard of. How big is this print? According to Arizona-based HammerDoris40k, who I believe appears in the image at top, it is currently 8’9” (she is 5’5”). That’s an incredible 2.7m tall — and it’s not even finished yet!
The project has consumed over 100 spools of filament and 2100 hours of print time to produce the ~600ish number of parts. These were both glued and soldered together. Evidently the remaining upper portion will require another 226 parts worth of filament and print time.
Building large objects with smaller printed pieces is an under-used method in the 3D print world. This project shows what is possible. But be careful, as you’ll have to move and store the final structure once completed.
