This week’s selection is the X Bench by The New Raw.

The X Bench is a peculiar 3D printed bench: it is a rocker, but it accommodates two people!

The New Raw is a Rotterdam-based design studio that’s been running for nine years. They specialize in organic designs made using robotic 3D print technology — and plastic waste. They explain:

“By blending digital precision with traditional craftsmanship, the studio designs tactile pieces with layered textures and organic forms. Each product is heavy-duty, long-lasting, and 100% circular, while the production process embraces natural irregularities, highlighting the beauty of raw materials.”

The design is unique, in that it involves two symmetrically overlapping volumes that form the lower portion on one side, and the upper side on the other.

They say the design is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. Because their process is environmentally circular, each X Bench is said to save 143kg of CO2.

With the increasing availability of robotic 3D printing systems, we should see more unusual 3D printed furniture designs like the X Bench.
