This week’s selection is the Lego Landmine by YouTuber Luke Creatives.

Luke Creatives is a channel where unusual machines are conceived and built. This one is a “land mine”, with a goal of pranking Luke’s sister. The concept was to spray sharp Lego blocks around the area, where the victim would have to walk.

The design itself isn’t revolutionary, but what attracted me to this project was the process, which is documented in the 18 minute video:

In the video, Luke proceeds through a thoughtful process, beginning with identifying the most “dangerous” type of Lego block. As it turned out, this test wasn’t quite perfect, but you’ll have to watch the video to the end to learn why.

Luke then pursued the perfect design for a system to launch Lego blocks, trying various means of propulsion including CO2 cartridges and springs. After some iterations, he focused on a spring-loaded approach and designed a system around that.

During all this experimentation, Luke continually re-designed and printed new versions of the landmine parts on what appears to be a Prusa Mini.

This is why I like this project: someone with an idea and perhaps the tiniest 3D printer available was still able to design an effective device.

Iteration wins, every time.
